Best Content Creator Equipment for Travel

best content creator equipment for travel

After more than a decade in news and video production—and now as a journalism, travel writing, and digital content creation instructor for Purdue University—I’ve learned this: the right gear transforms “nice trip” photos into stop-scrolling stories. But here’s the catch—when you’re traveling internationally, especially for work, you can’t bring everything. There are airline weight limits to consider and the simple reality of hauling gear through crowds and cobblestone streets. Content creator equipment for travel must be light, portable, and versatile.

This is particularly the case if you’re a carry-on only traveler, like me. I need to fit clothing for a month, my work laptop, and my creator gear in one tiny bag.

So what actually makes my list of best content creator equipment? After countless trips abroad teaching and creating, I’ve narrowed it down to four essentials that consistently earn their spot in my carry-on.

However, before I dive into that list, I want to tell you a little story about why I prioritize the weight and portability of content creator gear. Let’s just say, I learned the hard way…

Picture two sleep-deprived parents (who’ve just survived a 16-hour flight with an 11-month old) attempting to board packed trains during Sydney’s rush hour with two giant suitcases, a car seat, stroller, traditional tripod, bulky camera/accessories, and all those child care essentials. It wasn’t pretty. We ended up walking… awkwardly… for more than a mile to our Airbnb.

My motto now? First, only travel with what you can easily carry. Second, invest in the content creator equipment that makes streamlining possible. Will this look different from how you create at home? 100% – but different can be a good thing!

In fact, during the last study abroad program I taught in Stockholm, I didn’t even bring a tripod! This is after investing—quite substantially—in the “ultimate” carbon fiber travel tripod from Peak Design for my travels (it’s nearly $600). Don’t get me wrong, it’s amazing tripod and folds up to the diameter of water bottle. Photographers regularly praise Peak Design as “innovative”, so I knew it was a trustworthy brand.

However, when I tucked it into my 46L Osprey Carry-On Compliant Laptop Backpack with my heavy video editing laptop, my bag exceeded the weight limits of the airline we were flying.  Instead, I relied the four pieces of content creator equipment I’ll discuss below, my trusty Canon EOS RP camera (with my 35mm RF lens), and a small camera bag to prop up my gear whenever I needed a tripod. Turns out, that was all I needed!

4 Game-Changing Creator Tools

I Won’t Leave Home Without This Content Creator Equipment

1. HOVERAir X1 – Pocket-Sized Cinematic Magic

Think of this as the drone that doesn’t weigh you down. In fact, it is so lightweight, it doesn’t even classify as a traditional drone! Weighing in at just 125g, it’s lighter than an iPhone and exempt from the hassle of FAA registration. Best of all, it’s a breeze to use!

The HOVERAir X1 self-flying camera literally takes off from the palm of your hand—no controller, no complicated setup. You push one button to take off and can use gesture control to land. It’s so easy to use, I had my 8-year-old son flying it after a 5 minute tutorial. You can watch us in action in this reel.

It folds up like a book, is tiny enough to slip in a jacket pocket, and dishes out quality visuals.  You can easily toggle through a variety of shot modes (i.e., follow, orbit, bird’s eye, dolly track). The HOVERAir captures the cinematic aerial shots that give your travel videos instant “wow” factor.

For solo travelers and fashion creators, this is a game-changer. No need to flag down someone to film your epic hike during the midnight sun of Tromso, Norway (watch my footage here) or your outfit-of-the-day frolic in the garden’s of Stockholm’s Drottningholm palace—the HoverAir does it for you!

2. Insta360 X4 – Capture Every Angle (Including Your Own)

This is hands-down one of the best pieces of content creator equipment I’ve ever used. The Insta360 X4 allows you to record both the scene in front of you and your reaction to it… in real time. It’s smooth, versatile, and nearly indestructible—perfect for everything from capturing Sydney’s majestic opera house (click here for video) to winding hikes in the Italian countryside.

The ability to reframe shots after the fact means you’ll never miss the best angle. For creators, that’s invaluable: one clip can become multiple pieces of content, which saves both time and memory card space!

I also use the Insta360 regularly for my lifestyle TV show, Life on the Wabash. When you pair it with this invisible selfie stick (extends up to 9.8 feet), you can create smooth, cinematic footage that looks just like a drone was following you around. The stick is lightweight and allows you to shoot indoors with ease, as well as in locations that prohibit drones.

Content Creator Equipment for Travel CreatorsKenu Stance

3. Kenu Stance – A Tripod You’ll Actually Use

Here’s the truth: full-size tripods don’t survive multiple international trips (if they make any at all). They’re an awkward dimension and a pain to pack, much less to haul through airports. That’s why I swear by the Kenu Stance—a compact, 10-in-1 magnetic stand that works as a tripod, phone holder, airplane mount, and even a gorilla pod alternative.

It’s ridiculously small but endlessly useful. Whether I’m filming a time-lapse sunset in Tromso or need a quick tripod setup in a restaurant or palace, this little gadget has me covered. The magnet is strong. I never once worried about losing my phone while shooting in precarious locations.

The only downside is its weight. The Kenu can feel a little heavy in your hand. It’s 3.1 ounces, so it takes come getting used to when you attach it your phone. I should also mention the price point. The Kenu is nearly $70. While I love mine, you may be equally pleased with a similar and less expensive item like this one.

If you have more specific phone tripod and mounting needs, I would encourage you to explore Kenu’s Amazon storefront. It has some pretty clever options for travelers.

4. CapCut – Edit Like a Pro From Your Phone

This last one isn’t exactly content creator gear, but it’s essential equipment for travel creators! Great shots don’t matter if you can’t share them. And traveling with a video editing laptop isn’t always feasible. Enter CapCut—my go-to mobile editing app. It’s free, intuitive, and powerful enough to rival desktop software like Adobe Premiere. And you can take it anywhere your phone goes!

What makes CapCut indispensable for travel creators are its templates and smart tools. You can create polished, professional edits on the move—whether you’re waiting for a flight or sitting in a café between writing sessions.

There is a paid “pro” version, which I find valuable enough to pay for. However, you can accomplish most edits and many fun effects without a subscription.

Instagram’s Edits app is a decent CapCut alternative and seems to improving/adding features each month. Canva has also rolled out an online video editor. Ultimately, you need to test them out and see which works best for you. Personally, I don’t feel either can rival the ease-of-use CapCut offers. That’s why I recommend CapCut to my Purdue content creation students first.

Why Streamlined Gear Matters

When you’re balancing teaching, creating, and traveling, gear decisions can make or break your content. The best content creator equipment is not only high-quality but also portable and versatile. My toolkit may be small, but it’s been tested in classrooms, cobblestone alleys, and airports around the world.

And I’m not alone in the search for the right tools. The New York Times Wirecutter recently did a deep dive into the best vlogging cameras—and their findings echo mine: you don’t need all the equipment, just the right equipment.

Final Thoughts: Build Your Own Streamlined Kit

If you’re a new creator looking for the best content creator equipment, start small. Choose gear that appears intuitive to learn, fits your style, packs easily, and helps you create consistently. You don’t need a giant studio setup to tell powerful stories—you simply need tools that free you to focus on your vision.

While these four pieces of gear are the foundation of my travel creator kit now, I started with this simple pocket-sized vlogging camera and my phone. That’s it!

Content creator gear is something you build and tweak over time. To invest wisely, consider your needs and the type of content you like to make. Every creator is a bit different.

I hope this discussion has been helpful, so you can turn fleeting moments abroad into content that resonates long after the trip ends.

So, travel creators—your toolkit just got an upgrade. Which one’s going on your must-pack list?
